Coimbatore : After a great deal of huff and puff, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has finally allotted a common symbol on Friday for the TTV Dhinakaran-led Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly by-polls in Tamil Nadu.
The 54 MP and MLA candidates of the AMMK group will now contest with the Gift Pack symbol that was selected by Dhinakaran from a set of symbols that were with the ECI.
Despite contesting as a group, the candidates of AMMK - according to the Supreme Court - would be considered as independent candidates, which offers them an easy cross over to any party, after winning. They cannot be disqualified under the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly (Disqualification on Ground of Defection) Rules, 1986.
