With the beginning of this year marked by soaring temperature levels, forest fires broke out in many areas in February. Hundreds of acres of trees in Mudumalai and Masinagudi forest regions were charred due to the sudden fire breakouts, which could only be controlled and then doused after many days.
With the temperature further rising since the beginning of this month, the Nilgiris Forest Department has decided to pull all the stops to prevent any further forest fires. Awareness banners for tourists were placed in the Mudumalai forest region and rewards were announced for information of people who cause fire outbreaks in the forests.
CCTVs too have been installed at the Thorapalli check post on the Gudalur-Mudumalai forest route. Warning signboards and awareness boards have also been erected in the Thorapalli region.
