Maiam will provide full legal support for families of sexual assault and rape victims - Dr. Mahendran, VP, Makkal Needhi Maiam

Coimbatore: Absence of swift and severe punishment is encouraging child and sexual abuse crimes said Dr. Mahendran of Makkal Needhi Maiam.

Coimbatore: Absence of swift and severe punishment is encouraging child and sexual abuse crimes said Dr. Mahendran of Makkal Needhi Maiam.

The murder and rape of the 7-year old girl from Thudiyalur has once again rocked the conscience of all Coimbatoreans. Off late, there have been a spate of such crimes inflicted on women and children in Coimbatore and surrounding areas in an alarming frequency. “Even before we could get out of the Pollachi sexual assault case, this murder and rape of the 7-year old girl is a seething attack on our collective morals as a society” he said in an emotional appeal regarding the incident.

“In light of every such crime unleashed on women and children, politicians across the spectrum condemn the act but fail to expedite the enquiry and judicial process. Importantly, the root cause of the problem is left unaddressed.

Adding to the woes, the political inefficiency and intrusion into the police enquiry process in Pollachi has shattered the hope of the people.

This just shows the disparity between public thinking and how our politicians have failed to take actionable and necessary steps for annihilating such heinous crimes.

Makkal Needhi Maiam and our women’s wing have been working closely with experts to come out with long term solutions to stop these crimes and also to support the family of the victims legally and providing psychological support. We will ask our team to get in touch with the victim’s family and offer the best lawyers and legal support for the family of the victims to ensure justice is not delayed” he said.

“We strongly condemn such brutalities, police inaction and the interference of politicians to not punish the ‘culprits’ in time and it is not enough for politicians to just simply talk about these incidents but ensure swift punishment and full legal recourse is provided. So today we are taking the first step towards doing something meaningful for the affected families.”

This is a welcome move from the Makkal Needhi Maiam leadership and we hope that this will provide some relief for the grieving families.
