Coimbatore: Though the Coimbatore Central Prison is known for its high security, illegal activities are reportedly on the rise due to policemen at the second rung. This has triggered the need for stricter vigilance and intense monitoring at the Central Prison.
Coimbatore: Though the Coimbatore Central Prison is known for its high security, illegal activities are reportedly on the rise due to policemen at the second rung. This has triggered the need for stricter vigilance and intense monitoring at the Central Prison.
In Tamil Nadu, there are 10 Central Prisons, 3 women special prisons, 12 juvenile schools, 5 special branch prisons, 9 district prisons, 94 branch prisons, 2 open prisons accounting to a total of 134 prisons. In these prisons are thousands of prisoners who use cigarettes, banned tobacco products, ganja, mobile phones and indulge in other illegal activities as well. These activities do not seem to be curbed in spite of the prison department's vigilance and the action of the intelligence unit of the police department in escalating it to the Government.
Usually, the reports are followed by the police department conducting a surprise check in prisons and seizing all illegal products. Though these checks are regularly done, usage of these illegal products have not declined or stopped till date.
The vigilance unit of the prison department and the intelligence unit report all the activities inside the prison including the way prisoners are treated, demands of prisoners, their requirements as well as any illegal activity taking place.
Based on the information thus provided, the Government takes necessary action and makes changes too, if need be. Surprise checks are always carried out if illegal activities are rising in the prison. Thus, the vigilance unit plays a major role in attempting to curb down these illegal activities.
Multiple complaints have been raised that supply of cigarettes, ganja and other banned tobacco products are being done with the aid of police officials at the secondary level. In a quick response to such allegations, the prison department authorities themselves have warned these erring policemen.
"We have received information that a few of the second grade policemen working at the Coimbatore Central Prison are involved in aiding the supply of banned tobacco products, buying mobile phones from daughters of the prisoners and allowing former prisoners to stay in the prison residence. So, we have warned the policemen to refrain from such illegal activities and that stern action will be initiated against them if such abetting continues," stated the Central Prison Superintendent.
