The electoral flying squad was divided into three teams in Mettupalayam and carried out vehicle checks at important junctions. At 1.30 pm today, officials led by Senthil Kumar seized Rs.18 lakhs from a two-wheeler while conducting one such vehicle check at Moththepalayam on the Mettupalayam-Sirumugai Road. According to the flying squad, on investigation it was found that the men in the two-wheeler were Gandhi and Janarththanan of Sirumugai here.
They stated that they were travelling to deposit the money in the bank. Since they did not possess any appropriate documents, the seized money was taken to the Mettupalayam taluk office. The money was not deposited in the treasury since it exceeded Rs.10 lakhs. The income tax department officials were informed, after which they commenced investigation. Officials noted that the amount could be recovered after submitting necessary documents to the income tax officials.
