M.Farooq (31), an iron scrap dealer from Ukkdadam believed in atheism and fought against discrimination based on religion and caste. He has hacked to death on March 16, 2017 by his friends Munaf, Ansarth, Sadam Hussain, Shamsuddin, Akram and Jaffar who were enraged by his anti-islamic thoughts and posts in social media.
A resident of Coimbatore's South Ukkadam, he was a member of Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam (DVK).
DVK leader, Kolathur Mani and eminent writers including Sundaravalli, Paamaran and Mohammed were part of the event to commemorate the death of the young atheist.
During the meeting, the members of DVK vowed "Let's sow humanity not religion".
As part of the event, a ritual-free, self-respect marriage was solemnised which was devoid of patriarchal customs like dowry or tying the thaali.
