Coimbatore : The Coimbatore District Collector, Rajamani stressed on the importance of voting among students at a session held in the Avinashilingam University campus, here today.

Ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, a 'voters awareness' session was held at the Avinashilingam University in which the District Collector Rajamani, the Chancellor of Avinashilingam University Krishnakumar, the University Vice-Chancellor Premavathy Vijayan and many others officials participated. The college students made a voting pledge at the beginning of the session.

Speaking at the session, Rajamani said, "Youngsters are high achievers as per Dr.Abdul Kalam’s quote on dreams. Youngsters have to dedicate themselves completely for the development of the nation. The Indian Election Commission is conducting various awareness programs to highlight the importance of casting votes, especially with regard to the first-time voters.

To achieve 100 percent voter turnout, various measures such as awareness posters, street plays, issuing pamphlets and signature movements are carried out. Government officials are conducting voting awareness campaign at rural and urban areas. These awareness programs have been conducted to make college students aware of the importance of casting votes.

It gives me pleasure to know that the NSS students of this university carried out field work in 20 to 30 villages. I appreciate their effort and wish for it to continue further. Students should put in efforts to create awareness on the importance of voting in the areas where they carry out their field works, thus paving the way for the installation of polling booths there," he added.
