Coimbatore : R Kanagaraj, the 64-year old MLA from Sulur in Coimbatore passed away a few minutes ago. It is reported that he suffered a cardiac arrest while reading his morning newspaper and died on the spot.
His body has been kept at his residence in Sultanpettai for the public to pay their final respects.
With the demise of the Sulur MLA, the vacant seats to be filled for Tamil Nadu assembly seats in the upcoming elections will be 22. R Kanagaraj won the MLA elections in 2016 by 36,000 votes.
Strangely in 2017, R Kanagaraj's name had gone missing from the voters list. He was shocked to find his name and that of his wife's in the list of deceased voters.
R Kanagaraj had threatened to switch camps in 2017 demanding action against a quarry where two workers had died. Representing the Sulur Assembly constituency, he sought immediate intervention by the then District Collector, against erring officials in the mines department and the mine's owner for not ensuring safety of workers. He had reiterated then that his stand against his own party was based on the fact that he took his role as MLA seriously since the people had put their faith in him.
