Student fronts, lawyers and political parties across Tamil Nadu have been protesting with regard to the Pollachi sexual abuse case. Meanwhile, cases were filed against protesting students of the Government Law College in Coimbatore.
It is alleged that the Principal of Law College issued a circular stating that students who had cases filed against them will not be allowed to sit the exams. To demonstrate their support to these students, other students from the Government Law College staged a sit-in dharna yesterday, raising slogans alleging that cases filed against all the 167 students should be cancelled at the earliest. They further alleged that the Principal of their college is in favour of the ruling party.
Meanwhile, the Law College management has released a statement yesterday stating that no restriction had been levied on any protesting student for appearing in exams. Following the statement, it was expected that students would withdraw their protest. But the students have continued their stir even through the night, demanding to fulfill their three demands.
The demands include seeking action against the Coimbatore (Rural) Superintendent of Police, R Pandiarajan for disclosing the name of the victim in the Pollachi sexual abuse case, to cancel all the cases filed against the students who protested for justice and to transfer the college principal who has been serving in the same place for more than 10 years.
With the protest on for the second consecutive day, the college declared a holiday today. It is expected that with the students firm in their stand to continue their protests, they could be arrested anytime before this evening.
