The Nilgiris: In a generation engrossed with gadgets and scarce outdoor time, ushering in a breath of fresh air was the 'Aadhi Kalai' festival which brought back the charm of ancient Parai aattam and Silambaattam amongst students of the Government Arts College in Ooty.
Traditional old art forms are slowly vanishing due to urbanisation and growth of technology. Silambattam, Thapaattam, Paraiattam, Mayilattam, Puliattam, Oyilattam are ancient art forms on the verge of extinction.
Various organisations have joined hands to promote these art forms to the younger generation. “ARAM” Arts created magic in the campus of the Ooty Government Arts College as 200 students witnessed and participated in a veritable feast of Paraiattam and Silambaattam, in a special event organized by the management.
They showcased the two dance forms highlighting the uniqueness of the Tamil culture among students. The college students joyfully danced to the Parai beats.
It must be mentioned that the group of ARAM Arts are graduates and working professionals who have devoted themselves to resurrecting ancient art forms.
