Coimbatore : Situated on the banks of the Bhavani River in Mettupalayam, the Arulmigu Maidan Mariamman Kovil is celebrating its 91st year, with the Panguni Kundam festivities commencing amidst great fanfare. The festivities began with a pooja on March 5.

The festivities also included the traditional "planting the pole" and 'flag hoisting' among other activities. The main event of the festival, 'Kundam Irunguthal' was celebrated today with great fervor.

This morning, the Amman was brought from the Bhavani river after which the 'Kundam Irunguthal' (walking on fire) was conducted. After this the deity was decorated with flowers and special poojas were also conducted in the temple premises for the garlanded deity.
After this long a queue of devotees awaited their turn to offer their worship, with many of the devotees piercing themselves with spears and hooks. Hundreds of women devotees formed a procession from the Bhavani River to the temple and worshiped the 'Kundam.'
