The youth reportedly dumped about one tonne of waste generated by the local shops around the campus, since the college authorities did not allow them to enter the campus.
According to Ramkumar of Siruvani Vizhudhugal, more than 50 shops including restaurants, bakeries and petty shops around the College, serve both the public and students. “These shops were initially dumping their wastes in the Nalloorvayal stream nearby and the management had not taken care of it.
We had a dialogue with them and were collecting the waste ourselves to be dumped in their private dump yard for more than a year,” he said. Ramkumar added that the institution suddenly stopped them from using their dump yard, following which the youth resorted to dumping the waste in front of the campus, yesterday.
“They should be responsible for the wastes generated by the shops because the shops are doing business based on their students' needs. Hence, we wanted to teach them a lesson,” said Ramkumar.
When contacted, the Karunya management was not available to respond.
