The Nilgiris: Over 30 students from the Kundhada Government Middle School near Kotagiri were taken on a field trip to learn about the lifestyle of the Adivasi people. The Regional Educational Officer, Saraswathi flagged off the trip.
The students were first taken to Ralliah dam, located close to the Wellington Road, which is around 9 km from Coonoor. The dam was built in 1941 during the British rule. Students were imparted knowledge on the history and the unique features of the dam. Later, students were taken for a walk along the forest terrain around the dam, which consisted of rare special trees, including herbal trees and rich biodiversity.
Then the students went on to Pettumandhu, an adivasi village where students were given a hands-on experience of the lifestyle, food habits and the language of the Toda tribe. The students also got to catch glimpses of the gaur and rare species of monkeys exclusive to the Nilgiris region. The forest department provided security for the students' trip.
