Coimbatore: Electoral officials seized Rs.5.98 lakhs cash which was being carried in a two-wheeler, without proper documents in Mettupalayam.

A total of six flying squads had been appointed in Mettupalayam for the upcoming parliamentary elections to conduct vehicle checks. Meanwhile, when a team led by the Karamadai Regional Development Officer and flying squad officer Ravichandran checked a vehicle at Jadayampalayam Pirivu on the Mettupalayam-Annur Road this morning, they seized Rs.5.98 lakhs from a two-wheeler.

The amount which was allegedly hid under the seat cover of the two-wheeler was handed over to the Deputy Officer, Kumaresan at Mettupalayam taluk office.

According to officials, on investigation they found that the person was Abdul Hakeem who had a shop at the Mettupalayam vegetable market. Though he claimed that the money was brought for business, officials refused to return the money back to him claiming that the money was in excess of the money allowed to be carried, as per election guidelines.

Officials sealed the amount in the Mettupalayam treasury after informing the Coimbatore and Nilgiris District Collectors. "The man can get back his money after submitting documents," he added.
