Coimbatore : The new coaches for the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) train operating from Mettupalayam to Ooty every day, which were manufactured at ICF, Chennai, reached the Mettupalayam railway station, today.
They are currently being unloaded with the help of giant cranes. The NMR has been accredited with the UNESCO World Heritage Site status, and operates through a breathtaking picturesque hilly terrain to the Queen of Hills.
Patrons from all over the world travel by the NMR just to inhale the true natural beauty of the Nilgiris, courtesy, a long winding journey through the Ghat sections.
With the summer tourist season around the corner, the NMR decided to introduce new coaches this year, to attract more tourists. The work for this transition began last year with the manufacture of the new coaches which arrived in Mettupalayam, today.
Large cranes were used to offload the coaches and place them safely on the tracks. More than 30 railway employees laboured today to get the coaches offloaded one by one, safely. Unlike the previous NMR coaches, the new coaches have been fitted with wider glass windows to enable a better view of the beautiful landscape.
It is estimated that 152 passengers will be able to travel comfortably in these coaches once they are connected to the NMR service, after the trial run.
A special coach with a refrigerator is also expected to arrive in Mettupalayam from Chennai soon.
