Coimbatore : The students and public in Mettupalayam have urged authorities to carry out necessary construction work at a Government middle school which was upgraded recently as a High School.

About six months ago, the State Government had passed an order upgrading the Government Middle School at Mani Nagar, in Mettupalayam to the status of a High School. Following this, an order had been issued to construct a new school and carry out other necessary expansion work.
The order also directed that the Primary School comprising of Classes 1 to 5 should function separately and to send an assessment plan to construct new buildings for the school while demolishing old buildings. As per the order, an assessment plan was prepared and sent by the Mettupalayam municipality. However, in spite of many months having passed, funds had not yet been been allocated.
It has also been reported that the old building in the school is being used for questionable activities during nights, with liquor bottles having been found in the school campus. Since the campus is covered with shrubs, snakes too have been spotted there.
Students and people belonging to the area have now come forward to demand that immediate action be initiated to carry out the necessary construction work, at the earliest.
