Forests in Anaikatti, Maruthamalai still afire

Coimbatore : Even as more than 50 people are involved in fighting the forest fire that is on in the Maruthamalai for 24 hours till now, another forest patch has started burning near Thekkaalur in Anaikatti in Coimbatore Range today.

Coimbatore :  Even with over 50 people fighting the forest fire that broke out in Maruthamalai 24 hours ago, another forest patch caught fire early this morning near Thekkaalur in Anaikatti, in the Coimbatore range today.

The fire has been spreading rapidly in the Anaikatti hills close to the Nilgiris Biosphere Nature Park. Despite determined untiring efforts from foresters and local lads, the fire could not be brought under control and was spreading quickly on account of strong winds.

According to sources, since a majority of foresters and volunteers have been mobilised to douse the fire in Maruthamalai, not many could be sent to Anaikatti, which is also a part of the Coimbatore Forest Range.

The fire at Maruthamalai spread from a nearby patta land last evening, and has spread closer to the the Maruthamalai Temple, burning a vast area of forests enroute. While 32 people were involved int he firefighting efforts, more than 20 people joined in today which has helped control the fire except for a few patches in the region.

However, strong winds encumbered the job at hand and helped spread the fire. Firefighting operations are expected to continue until late night, today.

In a kind gesture to help the fire fighters, members of the #C4TN have offered to provide food and necessary equipment, including torch lights and power banks. Supplies are being sent to the teams regularly by the volunteers of #C4TN.
