The Indian Meteorological Department’s forecast indicate that heat wave conditions could be expected in isolated places of Tamil Nadu. Therefore, the Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management has appealed to the public to take the following precautions on the days with high heat waves. A release from the Commissionerate of Revenue Administration and Disaster Management on the Do’s and Don’t for the summer, states as follows:

Therefore, the Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management has appealed to the public to take the following precautions on the days with high heat waves. Do’s
Drink sufficient water at regular intervals even if not thirsty.
Drink tender coconut water, homemade drinks like lassi and rice water (taroni), lemon water, buttermilk etc to prevent dehydration.
Wear light coloured loose cotton clothes; use protective sunglasses and hat/umbrella while going out in the sun.
Keep your home cool, use curtains, shutters or sunshades or keep windows open at nights.
Schedule strenuous jobs to cooler times of the day.
Pregnant workers and workers with a medical condition should be given additional attention.
Keep animals in shade and provide them with plenty of water.
Dont’s
Do not leave children or pets in parked vehicles.
Avoid going out in the sun, especially between noon to 3 pm.
Avoid playing in the open ground between noon to 3 pm.
Avoid strenuous activities outside between noon to 3 pm.
Avoid drinks that dehydrate body such as coffee, tea and alcohol.
Look out for signs of heat stroke include weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, sweating, seizures and passing urine which could be dark yellow or orange yellow in colour.
