Wayanad : In what could be the third wild elephant capture in recent times around the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve (NBR), foresters of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary captured a tusker named by the locals as Wadakkanadu Komban at Chambaruthimoola in Wayanad, on Tuesday.
Wayanad : In what could be the third wild elephant capture in recent times around the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve (NBR), foresters of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary captured a tusker named by the locals as Wadakkanadu Komban at Chambaruthimoola in Wayanad, on Tuesday.
The elephant which was roaming the area was darted early morning yesterday and later caught using the help of three Kumkis. It was then transported to the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary and shut in the Kraal. The elephant will now be trained as a camp elephant in Muthanga, with the help of mahouts and wildlife veterinarians.
According to reports, the elephant was roaming around Sulthan Bathery in Wayanad for more than a year and was creating panic in the area. It was also reportedly responsible for the death of three persons in the vicinity and had damaged crops. The tusker was radio collared and its movements continuously monitored. Despite dedicated efforts from the forest department to guide him back to the forest, the elephant kept moving back close to human habitation and hence was eventually captured and shut inside the Kraal.
