Coimbatore : Even as Pollachi reels after the sexual abuse and extortion case came to light, the case in itself is snowballing into a major issue in Tamil Nadu. The case has now been handed over to CBCID which by itself augurs as a major development in the case.
While the case is being dissected on social media, comments shaming the victims and their families are rife. The brother of the victim who brought the sexual extortion to light has petitioned the District Collector that his sister and family are being harassed and shamed by the community. The Collector has reassured him that necessary action will be initiated with regard to the petition for help.
Commenting on the issue, the District Collector, K Rajamani warned people to refrain from shaming and causing embarrassment to the families of the victims.
He also pointed out that all the four men detained, K Thirunavukkarasu (26) of Makkinampatti, N Sabarirajan (25) of Jothi Nagar in Pollachi, N Sathish (29) of Poonga Nagar in Suleeswaranpatti and T Vasanthakumar of Pakkothipalayam in Pollachi have all been booked under the Goondas Act.
The Collector opined that it is expected that more women could have been affected by the gang and also hinted on the possibility of a network behind the gang.
When questioned on the reason for denying permission for DMK's protest in Pollachi, the Collector said, "No permission was accorded to the party to conduct protests. Action would be initiated if they stage any agitation since the model code of conduct is in effect."
The Collector also apprised that a detailed note on the case has been sent to the National Commission for Women. The detained have been booked under Sections 354 (A), 354 (B) of the IPC, Section 66 (E) of the IT Act and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act.
