Lok Sabha elections to be held on April 18 in Tamil Nadu

Coimbatore: Elections for the 17th Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu will be held on April 18. The elections will be held in seven phases, between April 11 and May 19, announced Sunil Arora, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) on Sunday at a press conference at 5 pm at Vigyan Bhavan in Delhi.

Along with the Lok Sabha elections, the EC has also decided to hold bye-polls for the 21 assembly seats in Tamil Nadu. While 18 MLAs were disqualified by the Madras High Court in October 2018, under the anti-defection law for declaring their support to AMMK’s TTV Dhinakaran. The elections to these constituencies will also be held on April 18.

Date of Polling 

First Phase: 91 constituencies in 20 states April 11, 2019 




Second Phase : 97 constituencies in 13 states, April 18, 2019 




Third Phase: 115 constituencies in 14 states, April 23, 2019 

Fourth Phase: 71 constituencies 9 states, April 29, 2019 




Fifth Phase: 51 constituencies in 7 states, May 6, 2019 




Sixth Phase: 59 constituencies in 7 states on May 19, 2019

Seventh Phase: 59 constituencies in 8 states on May 19, 2019

25th March will be the last date of nomination. The voting will end on May 19, 2019. Counting of votes in all the 543 Lok Sabha constituencies will be held on May 23, said the Chief Election Commissioner. 

The first phase of polls to be held April 11, 2019. 

He also noted that the model code of conduct will come into force effective from today. Any violation will be dealt legally and stringent measures have been put in place by EC to have a free fair elections.

900 million voters have been identified, out of which 84.3 million voters are first time voters, the EC noted. 

"After seven rounds of talks with the Home Ministry, the dates have been finalised keeping in mind the exams. 10 lakh polling booths nation-wide has been consitituted for the forthcoming elections. Efforts to familiarize the usage of VVPATs and EVMs among the public will be carried out by the election commission along with the district and state administration. There will be 100% deployment of VVPATs at all booths across the nation", said the CEC.
