Coimbatore: A man, who was finding it difficult in accessing the ATM to activate his new ATM card was cheated by a man to the tune of Rs. 42,000, in the pretext of helping him.

Thangamani, a resident of Naal Road near Then Thirupathi in Mettupalayam visited Bank of India to exchange his expired ATM card with a new one. As instructed by the bank, Thangamani approached a nearby ATM to activate his new card.

As Thangamani was not familiar in using the ATM, he sought the help of a man who was helping others in the same ATM to withdraw cash.

Thangamani handed over his debit card to the man and also revealed the PIN number. The man inserted the card in the ATM and entered the PIN number and said that he had activated the card.

After Thangamani left home, he received an SMS in his phone stating that Rs. 42,000 has been withdrawn from his account.

He immediately lodged a complaint with the Mettupalayam police, who have launched a hunt for the miscreant.

The police found that the miscreant has deceived Thangamani by replacing his card with another invalid card and has withdrawn Rs. 20,000 from an ATM. And, later purchased Rs. 22,000 worth of jewellery from a shop on the Ooty- MTP road using the debit card.

The police are scrutinising the CCTV footage to nab the offender.
