Will the Ooty - Coonoor road expansion work be completed before the season?

The Nilgiris: The once tranquil drive to Ooty is now very cramped even during normal non-season days. The increase in local population, rising temperatures and proximity to Coimbatore has increased the general traffic to Ooty. This becomes pretty bad once the season starts in April and May when many lakh tourists come to Ooty from various parts of India and the world.

To address this to a certain extent, the government had approved some road expansion works in a 4.5 km stretch from Valley View to Finger Post. The expansion work involves clearing encroachments, expanding the road, creating structures aiding in the flow of rain water, constructing small parapet walls. This project was allotted Rs. 27 crores and work was started nearly 8 months ago.

Since Thalayattimandhu, Sathunavu Bus stop, Aavin Area, Ooty Nagar are important and busy areas, the work around this area has been expedited to meet the deadline before the season starts in May.

Public really hope that this work will be completed before the season starts. With the elections looming around the same time, there is apprehension in the air if the works will be completed before this deadline. If the work is not completed, we might be looking at chaos with several lakh tourists and thousands of vehicles being cramped without proper traffic flow.
