Coimbatore : The Indian Women Network of Confederation of Indian Industries, Coimbatore, celebrated International Women’s Day on the theme 'The Focus is You' at an event organised in the city.
"This is the country where women's rights are only on paper, even though our Constitution ensures various legal rights and various social legislations support the importance of women," opined Sudha Ramalingam, Senior Lawyer and Women’s Rights Activist at a program organized by the Indian Women Network of CII, Coimbatore.
R Varadarajan, Chairman, CII Coimbatore Zone and Whole Time Director, Rajshree Sugars and Chemical Ltd. in his opening address reiterated the importance of women in society. S Malarvizhi, Co-chair, IWN Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu and Chairperson and Managing Trustee of Sri Krishna Institutions, Coimbatore opined that a woman cannot succeed without the support of men.
"A woman is in no way inferior to another. The present women have no inhibitions, and this is the reason for success. Women should have more happiness and their leadership skills should be honed. Live for others and be happy always," she added.
Sudha Ramalingam, Senior Lawyer and Women’s Right Activist in her Special Address said that the progress of women has changed but not as much. "There should be gender equality at home, work and in society. Follow the basic principles of the Constitution with respect to women empowerment. In reality, women have no equality in society. It is a man-dominated world. Women are not given key ministers positions.
Women are mere representatives in all forums, but not given decision making power. In India, men are given much importance, and that has to change. For ushering in this change, women should fight. This is the country where women's rights are only on the paper, even though our Constitution guarantees various legal rights and various social legislations have mentioned the importance of women."
Dr. Maya Mahajan, International Women Achiever Awardee and Environmentalist-cum-Activist spoke on social well-being for women. Sasirekha Vengatesh, Senior Faculty and Trustee, Art of Living and practising Charted Accountant addressed the gathering on personal and professional well-being for women. Sangeetha Ashwin, Convener, IWN, Coimbatore and Managing Partner, Spectra Traders spoke on context setting, and thereafter S Srividya Lakshmi concluded the event by proposing the vote of thanks.
