Projects launched today included lake rejuvenation and restoration, multi level parking and UGD at Sivaram Nagar. But the question that arises among the common man is why conduct an event in a busy junction during peak hours and disturb traffic?
"The Karumbukkadai- Ukkadam stretch is already a big mess with the ongoing flyover construction. Hundreds of vehicles, two wheelers and four wheelers coming from Palakkad Main Road and Pollachi Road use this road to reach the city. Owing to the flyover work under progress, vehicles use the road adjacent to Periakulam which was meant to be a 'walkers pathway' initially when it was built.
The road even on normal days gets overcrowded during peak hours and it sometimes takes nearly 40 minutes just to cross that stretch during peak hours. In such a scenario why set up the stage for the event very close to the point where vehicles come from the Ukkadam-Periakulam road and merge with traffic near the Ukkadam bus stand?" lamented a regular frustrated commuter.
Ramesh, another commuter who lives in Kuniamuthur and runs his own business on Avinashi Road, says, "This has caused a traffic jam for nearly two hours and office-goers are the main sufferers today since it is the peak hour between 9.00 amto 10.30 am. I was rushing to office and the traffic congestion started from Karumbukkadai. I had to take the road on the right side just before climbing onto the road adjacent to Periakulam.
That road which I took is in a very bad shape and not meant for use, due to the ongoing flyover work. But somehow i had to reach Ukkadam , so I just took the road. It would have taken at least an hour more had I taken the regular road which is totally jam packed."
Developmental schemes are good but why should a public event be held at such a busy junction and disturb the public is the question that needs to be answered by the concerned authorities.
