Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown lauds women in the city for contributing to society

The theme for International Women’s Day this year celebrated on March 8 was “Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change.” It put innovation by women and girls, for women and girls, at the heart of efforts to achieve gender equality.


Coimbatore : The theme for International Women’s Day this year celebrated on March 8 was “Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change.” It put innovation by women and girls, for women and girls, at the heart of efforts to achieve gender equality. 



Achieving a gender-equal world requires social innovations that work for both women and men, and leave none behind. From urban planning that focuses on community safety to e-learning platforms that take classrooms to women and girls, affordable and quality childcare centres, and technology shaped by women, innovation can take the race for gender equality to its finishing line by 2030.

In sync with the theme for commemorating International Women's Day, the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown organised an event on Friday at the Coimbatore Club under the banner 'I Rise' to felicitate exemplary women in the city for their achievements and innovation in their respective areas of influence. 

Dr. Krishnananda, the President of Rotary Club of Coimbatore Downtown welcomed the awardees and those gathered at the event. As many as five women were presented with the title of 'Exemplary Women in India' for their achievement and service to causes in the society. 

Ritisha Nivedha, Mrs. South Asia and Mrs. United Nation received the title for emerging as an exemplary woman and being an inspiration to fellow women in the country. She has been recognised as a beautiful woman with a beautiful purpose. 



Ritisha also strives hard to create women empowerment through her organisation NILA. Deepti Kapil was honoured for her exemplary achievement in the media fields, anchoring more that 1000 shows on TV with confidence, wit and warmth. 



Pradeepa Janahan, IFS was felicitated for her dedicated work in conserving forests and teaching forestry.  In her 14 years of forest service, she worked untiringly on conserving forests, afforestation, as well as supervision of natural park and sanctuaries. Pradeepa spoke at the event reiterating the need for planting trees which alone can make this planet green and peaceful. 

Dhanalakshmi Govindaraj was honoured for her contribution to the upliftment of society. She is known for having demonstrated strong commitment in community-based rehabilitation projects and livelihood of persons with disabilities. 



She founded Cheshire Homes, Coimbatore and cared for the growth and development of the mentally challenged. She is known for her yeoman service in instilling a dream for them, caring for them and also being able to love and honour society in its entirety. 

Shifa Harshad who has done remarkable work in the field of preventive medicine in dental pediatric head, neck and health areas was also honoured at the event. Shifa has enabled affordable and affirmative dental care in Coimbatore by which she was able to help more than 350 children with positive results.



Speaking at the event, Shifa urged young mothers to breastfeed their babies rather than bottle feed since breastfeeding prevents children from crooked teeth, diabetes and obesity. "I hope, at least in another 10 years, every mother will only breastfeed," reiterated Shifa.

Members of the club along with their families took part in the felicitation ceremony and cherished the Women's day.
