The Nilgiris : After conducting an inquiry into the three Cantonment schools functioning near Coonoor, the Regional Education Officer, Karthik affirmed that all three schools including the Tamil medium school and Cantonment school will not be shut down.
These schools incur an annual operating cost of Rs.2.31 crores. Presently, students from both the Cantonment region and outside are being provided education, free of cost. However, according to Section 62, students from outside Cantonment should not be admitted into the school.
Moreover, Rs. 1.35 crores from the Cantonment administration is being spent on such students from outside the Cantonment area. In this scenario, allegations were raised to keep a check on the expenses and to stop permitting students from outside the Cantonment area.
Hence, an inquiry in this regard was held by the Educational Officer who has now announced, "Hereon, students who are enrolled from outside Cantonment limits will have to bear all expenses for the academic years ahead, and also buy their uniforms and books themselves." He also added that students wishing to enroll for Nursery to Class 5 will be required to pay Rs.3000 and Rs.4500 for Classes 6 to 10, per year. "Students from the Cantonment area will continue to avail education free of cost in these schools," he noted.
Harish Varma, Chief Executive Officer of Wellington Cantonment Board and other officials were also present at the event where the announcement was made.
