Coimbatore : The world celebrates International Women's Day today, but the celebratory mood came to a grinding halt at the District Collectorate after a physically challenged woman approached the Collector to file a complaint on a bus conductor for verbally abusing her.
Sharmila Gandhi from Tirupur had travelled to Coimbatore to purchase stationery in wholesale, for sale purposes. This noon, Shymala boarded bus number 9A from Townhall to Uppilipalayam. When Sharmila demanded the balance cash from the conductor, it is alleged that the conductor abused her verbally in front of the other passengers. The conductor's behaviour not only humiliated her in front of the public, but also hurt her deeply for she felt that the modesty of a woman with disability was at stake. Distressed and embarrassed by the conductor's behaviour, Sharmila approached the Collector seeking action against the conductor. Sharmila was seen sobbing while filing her complaint which stirred the hearts of people present at the Collectorate.
