The program was announced by the ISRO Chief K Sivan, in January. He further appealed to the State government and the state education departments to extend their cooperation in making the program a success.
"ISRO has launched the special program for school children 'Yuva Vigyani Karyakram' (Young Scientist Program) to impart basic knowledge on space technology, space science and applications to young minds to arouse their interest in space activities," opined the city-based space agency. ISRO reiterated that the motive behind this young scientist program for school students is to "catch them young" and spread the passion for science.
"ISRO will ask the students to address problems and buy solutions from them," stated K Sivan in January.
Features of the Young Scientist Program for school children:
* ISRO will select over 100 students from across India and give them practical experience of how satellites are built under the new Young Scientist Program.
* Three students will be selected from each state/union territory to participate in the program each year, covering CBSE, ICSE and State syllabus. ISRO has approached the Chief Secretaries of the states for selection of students.
* The Young Scientists Program will be a two-week residential training program held each year, during summer holidays for students from across the country who have completed Class 8 and are studying in Class 9.
* Students will be selected on the basis of their academic performance and extracurricular activities.
* As per the information given by K Sivan in January, the program will let students visit ISRO centres, interact with senior scientists and will have access to research and development facilities.
* All the expenses of travelling and boarding will be funded entirely by ISRO.
* Vivek Singh, Director of Media and Public Relations announced in January that students will be encouraged to develop 'scientific payloads' that can be launched by ISRO.
* ISRO said that the list of selected students for the first ever session for the Young Scientists Program is expected by March-end.
* Students from rural areas will be given special weightage in the selection.
Six incubation centres are to be established in various parts of the country, in the North, South, East, West, Centre and North-East. The first Centre has been established in Agartala in Tripura and students will be able to use these Centres for R&D purposes.
