Coimbatore : With the Kaushika River basin included in the high profile Rs. 1800 crore Athikadavu-Avinashi Ground Water Recharge Scheme in Tirupur, 28 water storage centres in and along the river would be benefitted.

According to sources the Scheme-I of the project would directly feed 24 check dams constructed across the River. It would further fill two ponds and two tanks situated in the Taluks including Coimbatore West, Avinashi and Sulur in the districts of Coimbatore and Tirupur.

While the inclusion has brought joy in the faces of people who had been fighting for it, activists from the Save Kaushika River organisation feel that the real work has not begun yet.

According to P.K. Selvaraj, member of the Kaushika River Rejuvenation Movement, now that the scheme has been achieved, it was duty of the respective Panchayats to take care of the water bodies.

“General public and officials at Panchayat level should take necessary actions to desilt, reconstruct and repair the checkdams. Weeds should be removed and the bunds of the water bodies should be strengthened,” he said

He also informed that people should understand that water bodies are not beneficial to farmers alone, as they would also feed general and public and host a variety of flora and fauna, thus boosting the ecosystem.

“The scheme is going to increase the greenery in the area and ground water is to be recharged in most areas as the checkdams are constructed at an average gap of three kms from each other,” said Selvaraj.

He also hoped that left out places including Chinnavedapatti Lake, Kalapatty, Vilankurichi, Mudhalipalayam and Arasur should be added in the Scheme-II of the project.
