Coimbatore: Larsen and Toubro (L&T) construction has bagged the contract for executing the much-awaited Athikadavu-Avinashi drinking water supply and groundwater recharge scheme.
Coimbatore: Larsen and Toubro (L&T) construction has bagged the contract for executing the much-awaited Athikadavu-Avinashi drinking water supply and groundwater recharge scheme.
In a press release issued by L&T, the company has claimed that it has bagged the contract along with a project for construction of a new regulator in the Coleroon river in Tiruchirapalli. Only two technically sound companies made it to the tender process for the Athikadavu- Avinashi project and the State government has selected L&T construction.
The water and effluent treatment business of L&T construction will take up the project, which is scheduled to be completed within 34 months. The Rs.1652 crore scheme would be the first lift irrigation project in Tamil Nadu. Seven pumping stations and main pipeline to the length of 115 km have been planned for construction. A 30 MW solar plant will be set up for providing electricity for the project.
L&T has been given 10 months for development purpose and rest of the 24 months for construction. After commissioning of the project, L&T will operate and maintain the set up for the next 60 months before transferring it to Public Works Department.
L&T construction in its press release has stated that “The scheme is proposed to alleviate the plight of farmers in drought-prone areas of Coimbatore, Tirupur and Erode districts. The project scope involves replenishing 32 PWD tanks, 42 panchayat union tanks and 971 ponds in Annur, Avinashi, Tirupur, Sulur, Nambiyur and Perundurai blocks of the three western districts. When completed, the scheme is expected to benefit 9902 hectares of farm lands, besides recharging the groundwater in the region.”
