Coimbatore : Merchants thronged the Mettupalayam auction centre even as the Nilgiris garlic season began. With separate auction centres for all Nilgiris vegetables such as potato, carrot, beans and garlic available at the Mettupalayam auction centre, merchants who buy vegetables here are involved in distributing them to other districts and states in lorries, for sales.

As the Nilgiris mountain garlic season had commenced, its inflow into the market had increased. Nilgiris garlic is reputed for its spice and hence always has good market value. The season lasts for three months and hence merchants rush to buy the garlic, resulting in its price hike.

First quality garlic is sold between Rs.100 to Rs.190 per kg. Second quality garlic is sold till Rs.80 and ‘podi’ varieties of garlic are sold at Rs.40. The increase in the inflow accompanied with merchants showing huge interest have garnered a good price for 'garlic farmers.'
