According to activists the division which is adjoining the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve (NBR), is an important connecting habitat for wild animals that move in the NBR.
However, wild animals are often in for a tough situation as there is no dedicated wildlife veterinarian.
Sources claim that in the entire Coimbatore circle that encompasses Coimbatore, Tirupur, Pollachi and Nilgiris, only two veterinary officers have been posted, who are unable to move between divisions in time during emergencies.
“Wild animals on the other hand continue to suffer when affected by diseases or injuries caused by electric fences or small accidents,” activists.
They have also claimed that the wildlife veterinary hospital in Mettupalayam was inaugurated by former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has reminded shut since its inception in 2016.
“When such a facility is available, why should it be not used? The government should take necessary steps to fill in the vacancies in wildlife veterinary sector and also open the facility,” said an activist.
