Coimbatore: With thousands thronging the Vellingiri hills during the ongoing Maha Sivarathiri celebrations, like minded individuals have forged a partnership with forest department staff to clean the area here.
More than 60 volunteers and field staff joined together and started collecting plastic and other wastes carried by pilgrims at the foothills of Poondi.
According to volunteers, they will check the pilgrims and remove any easily combustible items like plastic.
“We have found that some of the pilgrims are taking liquor and cigarettes to the temple. We had detained such pilgrims and are using them in our campaign,” said a volunteer.
Those found with drugs are made to clean the premises and distribute handouts about keeping the area safe.
“People should understand that this is a forest area where wild animals live. It is our responsibility to keep it clean,” a volunteer said.
The volunteers would be staying in the vicinity for three days until the 5th of March and involve in the cleaning drive.
Pump motors are also installed in the area to be used in case of fire.
