The bus stand gets busier on weekends, as thousands of passengers especially labourers travel to down South places from the city.
Over the months, passengers have been complaining of scarcity of buses which in turn spoils their travel plans. On Saturday night, the irked passengers staged a sudden road block in front of the Situation ganalour bus stand to garner the attention of the concerned authorities.
According to reports, at around 9 pm, around 500 passengers engaged in the road block and even tussled with the drivers and conductors demanding adequate buses.
As the protest intensified, the police arrived at the spot and tried to reason with the protesting passengers but they failed to disperse. Finally, transport corporation officials arrived to the spot and involved in dialogues with the protesters. Based on the conversation with protesters, additional special buses were immediately allocated and the passengers boarded them.
Though the passengers withdrew the protest, they have urged to make this newly added buses regular to the routine schedule.
"Apart from regular buses, 14 news buses to Theni, 18 to Trichy, 26 to Madurai have been allocated based on the requirement. The unusually high passenger crowd has resulted in this chaos", said a transport officer.
