Coimbatore : As a part of 'Tamil Nadu Biodiversity Conservation Project’, the TN forest department has been planting trees around the fringes of the forest to improve tree cover and fodder for animals.
In one such initiative, the Coimbatore division forest department conducted a mass tree planting programme, last year in which 28,000 saplings were planted in Sirumugai, Sennamalai reserve area.
Owing to early summer and failure of northeast monsoon rains in the district, severe drought conditions has been reported in Mettupalayam, Karamadai and Sirumugai reserve areas. Due to which forest fires are on a rise.
In a bid to safeguard the trees from drought, the forest department officials are laying huge pipelines from Bhavani Sagar dam and routing water to Sirumugai reserve area.
"This arrangement could save the trees only for a temporary period. Only, summer rains can save them", said a forest officer.
