District Collector, J. Innocent Divya verified the units in the presence of representatives of political parties at the Additional Collectorate building in Ooty.

Briefing on it, the District Collectorate apprised that "684 voting booths have been ear-marked in the district for which 1699 voting machines have already arrived. 912 monitoring and control rooms will be set to monitor the another conduct of the elections".

An awareness programme on the newly introduced VVPATs and control units were held on February 9 in the Nilgiris district during which the public were sensitized on the VVPATs and on voting.

A VVPAT is intended as an independent verification system for voting machines designed to allow voters to verify that their vote was cast correctly to the symbol, to detect possible election fraud or malfunction, and to provide a means to audit the stored electronic results.
