Mettupalayam : The second season for 'Mangosteen' the 'Princess of fruits’ have began at the Kallar fruit garden in Mettupalayam.
The 20-acre fruit garden at Kallar is located at the foothills of the Nilgiris Mountains. Many rare fruit varieties including Durian, Mangosteen, Singapore Jackfruit and Green Apple and herbs of high medicinal value are cultivated at Kallar's fruit garden which was established in the year 1900.
Following adequate rainfall last monsoon, the yield of Mangosteen fruits have doubled at Kallar's fruit garden. Bunches of Mangosteen fruits could be found hanging in the trees which is most preferred by the people during summer season.
As these fruits are believed to maintain body temperature, maintains glucose levels along with other health benefits, people consume them throughout the summer.
The fruits are sold at the cost of Rs 400- Rs 500 per kg at the Kallar fruit garden. A portion of the produce are also exported.
