Coimbatore : Bike taxis have been operating in Coimbatore for the last 6 months or so. The service works by users downloading an app to their iOS or android smartphones and hailing a ride. One might think that this is similar to the cab hailing. Yes it is, but just that the vehicle that comes to pick you up and drop at your destination is a two-wheeler.

The laws that govern this service are murky to say the least and these are services that use the grey area in our legal system. The grey area is that the two wheeler is only authorised to be used for personal use and should not be engaged in commercial activities. But then the zillion delivery boys across the town from various food service providers is also by default illegal. So this service is treading such waters - illegal but with other twisted exponents of the similar service.

In this scenario, there have been quite a few skirmishes between call taxi and auto rickshaw operators and the bike taxi riders of Rapido. Today it reached a crescendo when call taxi drivers booked rides and hauled the bike taxi riders to the RTO and made an official complaint. They also added that bike taxis are not safe for the public and asked RTO to take stringent action on Rapido. RTO assured to look into this and take appropriate measures.
