Tirupur: Farmers staged a dharna in front of the Tirupur Collectorate with their family against IDBL pipelines saying that farmers of seven districts will be affected by it.

Bharat Petroleum is about to implement the IDPL pipeline scheme for which the pipeline is to be laid for 294 km which will pass across Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode, Namakkal and Krishnagiri till Devanakondhi of Karnataka to carry 3.52 million ton petrol every year. It was alleged that measurement work had commenced in farmlands due to which 40,000 farmers of seven districts could be widely affected.

"Earlier, the Gail pipeline plan was suspended as a result of persistent opposition from farmers with regard to laying pipelines in farmlands. However, the IDBL petrol pipelines are about to be laid in the same path which should be avoided and laid on roadsides, without causing any damage to farmlands," stressed the farmers.

The farmers who gathered at the District Collectorate along with their families to petition on this issue were stopped by the police, following which an argument broke out between both sides. Eventually, they were granted permission to petition to the Collector.
