Coimbatore : In a second incident of leopard being caught within two months, a give to six-year-old male leopard was caught in a cage at Perumal kovil pathi in Alandurai near Madukkarai Forest Range here today.
The animal that was roaming in the area fell for the bait and was caught in the cage that was placed there 20 days ago.
According to District Forest Officer D. Venkatesh, the cage was placed in the village after five goats and a few poultry were killed by a leopard in the area.
However, the leopard remained elusive so far and was caught around early morning today at a private farm, 25 meters away from the nearby reserve forest.
The animal is now being taken to the Thengumarahada reserve forest in Sathyamangalam for release.
This is the second incident of leopard being caught in the Madukkarai Range within a few months as a leopard was caught in the same range in Molappalayam, a nearby village on the 5th of December, 2018. The seven-year-old male leopard that was caught was released in the Sirumugai forest range on the same day.
Senior officials from the department had said that the animal could have followed the smell of goats that roam near reserve forests and advised people to keep cattle away from forested landscape to avoid human-animal conflict.
The leopard was later released at Thengumarahada in Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve.
