Coimbatore : Chinnathambi is certainly making everyone at the Varagaliyar elephant training camp happy with his cooperative behaviour as within a week’s time, the training team has started to teach him the command language given to elephants.

Chinnathambi would be made to listen to upto 90 commands of do’s and don’t that are in Assamese and Urdu languages during the training process from within the Kraal he is shut in now.
However, despite being inside the kraal, Chinnathambi has surprised one and all at the camp by showing a very calm behaviour.
“Usually wild elephants that are shut inside the kraal are very aggressive in the initial days. The first few weeks are a little difficult for all involved as as the animal would not give in. In the case of Chinnathambi we have been able to hand feed him on day one, which would not happen for other elephants within the first three weeks,” said an official from the camp.
His behaviour also allowed the officials to extend the size of the kraal within three days.
Since Chinnathambi was very cooperative, the training team from the Malasar tribe have already begun to teach him the basic commands known only to the tribe.
According to sources, the commands are in Assamese and Urdu as training of wild elephants hails from those regions, where elephants were initially captured in large numbers during kings rule.
The knowledge of the malarsar tribe is also derived from those areas.
If all go well and Chinnathambi allows his mahout to sit on top of him, he would soon be out of the kraal and be a normal camp elephant at the Kozhikamuthi elephant camp.
