Coimbatore : On a journey to eradicate begging for alms in the country, a 29-year-old youth from New Delhi who is on a walkathon from Jammu and Kashmir all the way to the Southern tip of the country was in Coimbatore today.
Coimbatore : On a journey to eradicate begging for alms in the country, a 29-year-old youth from New Delhi who is on a walkathon from Jammu and Kashmir all the way to the Southern tip of the country was in Coimbatore today.
Ashish Sharma, a former engineer resigned his job in 2015, in order to spread awareness about eradicating begging for alms in the country. He started his walkathon on 22nd August in 2018 and has covered 15,903 kms so far and has aimed at covering 17,000 kms.
Briefing media persons at the District Collectorate today, Ashish Sharma said that he was moved seeing a child begging for alms in the streets of Delhi.
“I was returning from my office and saw this kid bleeding and begging for alms. I wanted to do something and gave him first aid. I also helped him join a school,” he said.
Since then, Ashish has been working extensively to eradicate begging and has taken it up full time resigning his job.
He further added that despite efforts from Government, it has not been an easy task to eradicate begging as it has rooted deeply in country.
“I am dreaming of an India without beggars and with constant efforts and help from governments and people, it can be achieved,” said Ashish.
Ashish who walks 30 to 40 kms a day has crossed States including Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh in his conquest. He is also to visit the Andaman and Nicobar islands from chennai.
He was reaching Coimbatore on his way to chennai via Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Rameshwaram, Madurai, Dindigul, Thiruvannamalai, Vizhuppuram and Pondicherry.
He has also planned for a massive rally at New Delhi after completing the walkathon in March.
He has been meeting people and creating awareness among them about the eradication of begging in the country.
