Nagalakshmi (21) and Sivagami (27, two transgenders from Tirupur had undergone professional skill training by the state government and are employed as tailors in a private knit wear company. On Thursday, while the duo were returning after work, two policemen intercepted them near Bridgeway colony and allegedly assualted them.
Following the incident, more than 50 transgenders tried to file a complaint at Tirupur North station. As the police refused to accept their complaint, they staged a road roko in front of the police station in Kumaran road.
After police pacified them, they dispersed.
Tirupur has a population of 114 transgenders. The state government has provided housing facility for the transgenders at Neruperichal. To enhance their lives and bring inclusivity, the state government is providing skill development training and placements.
