Nilgiris : Smaller mammals which were living on grasslands in the Goldmines forest near Nadukani in Gudalur saw a tragic end as forest fire swept across their habitat here.

Despite best efforts from 10 forest staff and 20 members of the general public, the forest fire could not be controlled in time as it spread rapidly across to Ponnur and Ponvayal forests.

Many smaller mammals and bird chicks were burnt along with the grasses in the forests.

Following the incident, foresters have started drawing fire lines in the nearby Mudumalai Tiger Reserve.

Artificial water holes that have also been made inside the forest are being filled with water twice a day.
