Coimbatore : Close on the heels of driving licenses designed like 'smart cards' with additional features are being issued at the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) in the Coimbatore, Tirupur and Nilgiris districts, from today.
Speaking on this new initiative, the Deputy Commissioner of the Transport Department for Coimbatore Zone, K R Krishnamoorthy said, "Around 11000 driving licenses and 20,000 registrations were provided at the Regional Transport Offices in Coimbatore Zone".
He also noted that "Driving licenses and RC books are now issued in the size of 'smart cards' at the 16 transport divisions in Coimbatore, Tirupur, Pollachi and Mettupalayam. The licenses designed like smart cards are very safe and secure, since it has additional features such as a micro chip, QR code and hologram. People who violate law can now be easily identified with this 'smart card license' by swiping it".
This new initiative was implemented at the RTOs in Chennai last month.
