Coimbatore : Salem Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) U. Subbarao today inspected the ongoing renovation work at Mettupalayam (MTP) railway station.
During his visit he assured to consider the public request to extend the special train between MTP and Coonoor upto Ooty.
Addressing the media, the DRM said that the infrastructural facelift at Mettupalayam railway junction is being done, keeping in mind both national and global visitors.
"MTP is the entry point to the Nilgiris which is one of the globally renowned tourist destination. And hundreds of people, notably global tourists throng the MTP railway station to book tickets and board the historic toy train from MTP to Ooty. Hence, last year it was proposed to facelift the railway station at a cost of around Rs. 1.14 crore".
He also apprised that presently, works are ongoing to enhance the infrastructure at MTP railway station by modernizing the platforms, waiting rooms, toilets, drinking water facilities, separate ticket booking office and a new entry point to the station from the market area.
The DRM also noted that following public request to extend the special train service between MTP to Connoor, upto Ooty will be approved. "Talks are on to provide catering services in the train", he noted.
