Coimbatore: Over 3000 students of various educational institutions took part with zeal in the rally organised to commemorate the 'World Mother Language Day' here on Thursday.
With an objective to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism among the diverse population, every year February 21 is observed as World Mother Language Day.

The rally was flagged off from Women’s Polytechnic College till VOC Park by Siravai Adheenam Ramanandha Kumaragurubara Adigalar.

During the rally, the students raised slogans hailing 'Tamil' language. Perur Adheenam Santhalinga Marudhachala Adigalar, Koolavaanigar Ramasamy, Pulavar Appavu and many others participated in the rally.According to reports, due to globalization processes, they are increasingly under threat, or disappearing altogether.

At least 43% of the estimated 6000 languages spoken in the world are endangered. Only a few hundred languages have genuinely been given a place in education systems and the public domain, and less than a hundred are used in the digital world.
