Chennai : The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Indian National Congress have formally announced their tie-up and seat-sharing formula, today for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
"Congress would be given 10 Lok Sabha seats to contest from, similar to the one in 2004 when the two sides had tied-up for. And, DMK will contest in the rest of the seats after alloting seats for the alliance parties. Soon, the entire spilt up and the constituencies will be announced", said MK Stalin, President of DMK.
"There is a long relationship between DMK and Congress. We are very happy with the seat-sharing pact. And, this alliance will be emerge victorious in the upcoming elections", opined Mukul Wasnik, Senior leader of Congress.
The announcent comes a day after the BJP and AIADMK grand alliance during which 5 seats were alloted to BJP. Speculations are rife that DMK was merely biding time for AIADMK to make it stance clear.
Senior Congress leaders Mukul Wasnik, K.C. Venugopal and leaders of DMK, Stalin, K.S. Alagiri, Durai Murugan, T.R. Balu were present at the Anna Arivalayam were the seat-sharing pact was signed.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress and DMK drew blank contesting seperately in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
Tamil Nadu has a total of 39 Lok Sabha seats. A total of 37 of the 39 seats were won by the AIADMK, while PMK and BJP each won one seat.
Vaiko’s Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), The Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Thol Thirumavalavan’s Viduthalai Chiruthaikal Katchi (VCK), the Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) and one Kongu party are also expected to be part of the alliance.
