Coimbatore : Much to the relief of Chinnathambi lovers, the elephant that was captured from Udumalaipet and shut inside a kraal on Saturday has now been allowed to move in a larger enclosure in the Varagaliyar elephant training camp here.
The calm behaviour of Chinnathambi has reportedly gained him a favour among the mahouts are posted to train him and within a week’s time, the shutter in the kraal in which he was shut has been opened to allow free movement.
Initially, Chinnathambi was shut in a smaller enclosure where his movements were restricted. Wild elephants that are captured are initially shut in the Kraal for a month’s time or more depending upon the temperament of the animal.
It is only later that the inner closure is opened to allow the animal to move freely. This usually takes a longer time as the animal needs to obey to the commands of the mahouts. However, according to foresters, Chinnathambi has allowed being fed by the mahouts and is also showing an unusual calm behaviour unlike other wild elephants.
“He is calm and healthy. Five captive elephants have been deployed near him to make him feel comfortable. His health condition is also being monitored by a team of veterinarians who are posted exclusively for him,” said an official.
It may be noted that Chinnathambi will be taken out of the kraal once he allows the mahout to sit on top of him, which is the last phase of training.
